When a relationship breaks down, the financial obligations towards children does not end.
Child maintenance or Child support is financial support that helps towards a child’s everyday living costs. The Courts no longer have powers to order the payment of child maintenance. The Child Support Agency (CSA) can now assist in assessing the amount of maintenance one party needs to pay. CSA can also assist in collecting payments on a parties behalf.
There are a number of factors that the CSA take into consideration in calculating maintenance;
- Net income of the non-resident parent
- Number of children for whom maintenance is to be paid
Maintenance is only paid for those children who are under the age of 16 or between 16 and 19 and in full time education.
